Verse 1

C F C
They baptized Jesse Taylor in Cedar Creek last Sunday
                                                G7
Jesus gained a soul and Satan lost a good right arm
         C F
They all cried hallelujah when Jesse's head went under
      C G7 C
Cause this time he went under for the Lord

Verse 2

                                 F C
Among the local taverns there'll be a slack in business
                                                         G7
Cause Jesse's drinking came before the groceries and the rent
          C F
Among the local women there'll be a slack in cheating
      C G7 C
Cause Jesse won't be stepping out again

Verse 3

                                  F C
The scars on Jesse's knuckles are more than just respected
                                                   G7
The county courthouse records tell all there is to tell
            C F
The pockets of the gamblers will soon miss Jesse's money
      C G7 C
And a black eye of the law will soon be well

Verse 4

                             F C
From now on Nancy Taylor can proudly speak to neighbors
                                                 G7
And tell them just how Jesse took up with little Jim
    C F
Now Jimmy's got a daddy and Jesse's got a family
    C G7 C
And Franklin County's got a lot more man
